Honeyguide Foundation Tanzania is a grass roots, non profit, non-governmental organization based in Tanzania dedicated to support communities and the conservation of wildlife and natural resources through long-term community partnerships. The African Honeyguide is a bird that actively guides humans (and honey badgers) to beehives; we chose it as our symbol as it is a beautiful example of the symbiotic relationship between humans and wildlife and of successful partnerships in general. Honeyguide runs programs which strengthen community owned conservation areas in northern Tanzania. This is accomplished by focusing on five program goals: developing the “business side” of community conservation; improving management and governance; facilitating two way communication flows between communities and leadership; reducing and safely de-escalating instances of human-wildlife conflict; and protecting habitats for sustainable use by humans and wildlife. By integrating these approaches, we are promoting the long-term success of community conservation. Our current projects are being conducted in community wildlife areas which collectively span nearly 500,000 hectares of land. However, our impact reaches far beyond that, since much of Honeyguide’s programming is conducted in the land surrounding protected areas, where residents of member communities live and make their livelihoods.
