Community Wildlife Management Areas Consortium (CWMAC) is an apex body for all community wildlife Authorized Associations (AAs) managing wildlife management areas (WMAs) in Tanzania. In Swahili the Consortium is known as “Muungano wa Jumuiya za Hifadhi ya Wanyamapori Tanzania”. The consortium was registered under the Societies Act Cap 337 (RE.2002) on 22nd January 2010, with Registration Number S.A.16619. The establishment and function of CWMAC are stipulated under Regulation 29 of Wildlife Conservation (Widlife Management Areas) Regulations of 2018. Members of the consortium are those CBOs which have attained Authorized Association status from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism. Current there are 21 AA members and 17 CWMAs in different stages of establishment process. The consortium serves as a platform for AA members and other stakeholders to meet, discuss, plan and decide on different matters of their common interests. Importantly, the establishment of both CWMAs and eventually CWMAC is the result of the Wildlife Policy of Tanzania (WPT) of 1998 (revised 2007) which calls for community engagement in wildlife conservation in their village lands for better livelihood of the wild resources and enhance directly community benefits from wildlife management through tourism activities and other legal and sustainable natural resources utilization activities.
