Turkish Maarif School is a secondary school in Zanzibar which accepts students from around Zanzibar Islands. Basic education up to secondary level was compulsory and free in Zanzibar, according to the Education Act of 1982. Over time, the scope of basic education has shifted. Basic (primary) schooling lasted eight years prior to the revolution in 1964. The number of years increases to ten between 1968 and 1976. Basic schooling lasted 11 years from then till 1992. It was reduced to ten years in 1992. The overall educational system, as given forth in the Zanzibar Education Policy of 1991, is 3-7-3-2-2. Many students in Zanzibar have been struggling to get admission to join Turkish Maarif Zanzibar so they can acquire quality education for their prosperous future. Turkish Maarif Zanzibar provides students who later become independent in many of the aspects including social, economic and eventually able to embrace the culture of Zanzibar. Turkish Maarif Zanzibar is registered by the Government of Zanzibar as Zanzibar Examination Council is responsible for giving directives to ZEC officials while also acting as a mediator between the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training and ZEC.
