The Tanzania People’s Defence Force (TPDF) is the military force of the United Republic of Tanzania. It was established in September 1964, following a mutiny by the former colonial military force, the Tanganyika Rifles. From its inception, it was ingrained in the troops of the new TPDF that they were a people’s force under civilian control. Unlike some of its neighboring countries, Tanzania has never suffered a coup d’état or civil war. After the establishment of JWTZ, the Army developed the same three infantry units although the names were changed to give the Army an image of similarity with the environment of independent Tanzania and the camps that were using foreign names, from that time they were given patriotic names such as; Collito Barracks was named Lugalo in memory of Chief Mkwawa of Iringa who fought and killed the Germans in the Lugalo area. Kalewa Tabora Camp was named after Chief Milambo to honor him for the way he stood firm against colonialism. JWTZ is an equal opportunity employer. All People are employed equally.
